Train the Trainer

Bike rodeos are a commonly recognized event for kids, often serving as the only bicycle safety education they receive. Groups including PTA volunteers, scout troops, police officers and firefighters, hospital wellness coordinators and nurses, and school staff conduct bike rodeos. However, very many of these adults lack adequate bike safety training themselves and are looking for information on providing more, effective training, whether in a bike rodeo or another setting.

This project will bring that training to 40 locations around Illinois over a one-year span during the school year 2008-9. We will travel and present on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 4pm and 7pm each day. Click here for a schedule and (free) registration page.

The seminar teaches adults about bike safety principles, so they in turn can teach groups of kids or their own children. The topics:

  • Why teach bicycle safety to kids?
  • Basic checkout of the bicycle
  • Helmets – why and how to fit
  • Bicycling safely (progresses from sidewalks to on-road, as age and skills increase)
  • Summary on organizing a bike rodeo
  • Resources
