Illinois bicycle and trail plans
(Fall 2003) - IDOT doing statewide bike plan inventory
The Illinois Department of Transportation is working on a statewide inventory of local bike plans. One of the products that will be made available is a GIS layer with this information. We hope to include a link to the GIS layer and the list of plans, when the project is finished.
IDNR
helps counties do trail planning
The Illinois Department of
Natural Resources' Greenways & Trails Division actively promotes the development
of county greenways and trail plans through technical and financial assistance. The map
at left shows those counties with plans that are either completed or underway. Contact
IDNR at 217-782-3715 for specific contact information on any of these plans.
Metropolitan areas must plan for bikes
Each of the state's metropolitan planning organizations (MPO's) is required
to include a bike/ped section in their long-range transportation plan.
These plans are updated periodically. See MPO
contacts, status of plans, and other opportunities for more.
Specific bike plans in Illinois
The Kane County
Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan is a highly recommended document covering
best practices, design guides, wayfinding signage, funding sources, model
ordinances, a broad range of resources, specific Kane recommendations,
and more.
LIB has worked on several bike plans and served on many planning steering committees. Examples include LIB's Batavia Bicycle Plan (2007) and the North Aurora Non-Motorized Transportation Plan (2001).
