AURORA, IL -- The League of Illinois Bicyclists has released new bicycle safety sheets focusing on safe riding tips for children. The single-page format can easily be reprinted in school newsletters, copied for bike rodeos, and distributed through other groups.

The October 6 release coincides with International Walk and Bike to School Day, an effort to encourage active trips to school. Only 10% of American children walk or bike to school now, compared to 50-60% forty years ago. During that same time, physical inactivity and obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions, costing the country $117 Billion annually for treatment of related illnesses.

"Bicycling is an enjoyable, lifelong activity with so many health benefits," noted Ed Barsotti, Executive Director of the Aurora-based advocacy organization. "A kid's bike is his or her vehicle to gaining independence and growing up. Learning the right skills opens the door to biking more safely and confidently, from age 5 through 85."

There are two versions, available at www.bikelib.org/education/kidsheets.htm: one for younger elementary school kids, one for older elementary and pre-teens. Each addresses skills and issues appropriate for that age group, with further details for parents. Printed copies will soon be available from the League.
