VELOSOPHIE

Velosophie is a week-long reading and discussion program designed to complement physical activity with reflection on the meaning and significance of that activity. Derived from the Latin velo- and the Greek sophia - meaning, in turn, "swift" and "wisdom" - this mobile, humanities seminar experience intends to explore the connections between an active body and an engaged mind.

Through moderated, nightly discussions, participants in Velosophie have the opportunity to reflect upon thematic readings as they pertain to the athlete's experience of being in motion. Participants are asked to consider these readings as they seek to explore the physical, emotional, and intellectual spaces that parallel long hours spent on a bicycle, venturing through Illinois country at a human scale and at human-powered pace. Through encounters with readings like Franz Kafka's, "The Hunger Artist", Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", and Emily Dickinson's "The Heart Asks Pleasure - First", participants will be inspired to reflect, alone and with fellow riders, on the possible meanings of their activity and on the relation of this activity to other endeavors.

Velosophie is an experimental program. In order to best evaluate its benefit and format, our expectations are high. Participation and materials are free, but pre-registration is required. Space is limited, so interested individuals should pre-register early.
