LIB Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer to help LIB improve bicycling!

Got some time and energy, and a desire to help make a difference? We'd really appreciate your help. Check out our range of volunteer opportunities below, some quick and easy, some more involved. Almost all can be done from your home.

If interested, contact Ed Barsotti, via e-mail or phone (630-978-0583).

Make your own idea happen!

Got a great idea to improve bicycling in Illinois? Go for it! Talk to us about it - perhaps we can be a technical resource, provide contacts, find other interested cyclists, lend our name to the effort if helpful, etc.

Bike safety info distribution

Are you connected with local schools, scouts, your park district, YMCA, etc.? Help us distribute bike safety information for both kids and adults.

Local agency contact

It's important for local cyclists to be heard at City Hall. The level of involvement is up to you, and we can help guide you. Some ideas:

  • Talk with your local staff and political officials about bicycling.
  • Gather info and comment on upcoming roadwork or developments in your town. Let us know about these issues, so we can contact other cyclists, too.
  • If you're able, attend occasional transportation meetings in your area. We'll get you connected.
  • Does your town need a Bicycle Advisory Committee in your town? Let us know - we can help you make it happen.

Road design reviewer

We try to make it easier for cyclists to show a demand for bike-friendly roads through efforts like the Complete Streets project. From our lists, find upcoming road projects near you. Fill out a survey with your local knowledge and suggestions.

GITAP bike tour volunteer (June 11-17, 2006)

With the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, we're conducting another Grand Illinois Trail and Parks ride in 2006. We have a number of volunteer roles. If you want to help, you can volunteer for the whole week, or part-time if you want to ride on other days.

Bike club ride brochure mailings (January-March)

In March of each year, LIB sends out club invitational ride brochure mailings. Coordination is needed with bike clubs around the state, usually through e-mail.

Bike club contact

Belong to a bike club? Contacts are needed for advocacy issues, and to make sure your club is stocked with LIB brochures, bike law cards, website cards, safety info, etc.

Sending membership premiums

Many of our members request our premiums, including bike lights, computers, t-shirts, and more. Throughout the year - but especially around our membership drives - help could be used to package and mail these out. (At your own home)

Grant investigating and writing

Want to help expand what LIB is able to do? There's some money out there (foundations, companies) that could support bike advocacy and more of our projects. We'd love to have some help finding it and getting it.

Help with an LIB contract

LIB works on a variety of contracts that help bicycling. Some of them are appropriate for volunteer help. Recent examples include data collection of roadway characteristics (to determine bike suitability), finding local accommodations (for the Grand Illinois Trail and Mississippi River Trail guidebooks), and more.

Phone tree volunteer

When a legislative vote or an important local meeting occasionally comes up, phone calls can help get cyclists to speak up.

Newsletter contributor

Involved in a bike issue in your area? Should others know about it? Then please, write it up and submit it to our newsletter editor.
